Why do we watch and like horror movies? Despite a century of horror and entertainment cinema maker, little research has examined human motivation to see fictional horror and how horror movies influence people’s behavioral, cognitive and emotional responses. us horror movie
This review provides the first synthesis of the empirical literature on horror movie psychology using multidisciplinary research in psychology, psychotherapy, communication studies, development studies, clinical psychology and media studies.
The document considers the motivations for people’s decision to see horror, why people enjoy horror, how individual differences influence responses and preference for horror movie, how exposure to horror movie changes the behavior, how the horror movie is designed to achieve its effects, why fear and why we fear specific types of stimuli, and how the taste for horror develops during childhood and adolescence.
The literature suggests that
- Low empathy and fear are associated with greater enjoyment and desire to watch horror movies, but that the specific dimensions of empathy predict people’s responses better than others
- There is a positive relationship between the search for sensations and the enjoyment / preference of horror, but this relationship is not consistent
- Men and boys prefer to watch, enjoy and seek our horror more than women and girls

Why do people watch horror?
The suspense and the resolution of the suspense are two important components of horror and our response to the horror movie. The suspense refers to the accumulation of threat, the tension created before the manifestation of the threat and the resolution / elimination of the threat.
It has been defined as acute and fearful apprehension about deplorable events that threaten the protagonists and an experience of uncertainty whose hedonic properties can vary from harmful to pleasant (Zillmann, 1996, p. 108). The tension created during the sensation of suspense may arise from the events, which means conflict, dissonance and instability (Lehne and Koelsch, 2015).
A theory of horror enjoyment, Zillmann’s excitement transfer theory (1980, 1996), argues that we derive our enjoyment of the horror movie from this suspenseful feeling (this theory could also explain the enjoyment of the movie without terror, which implies the invocation of suspense) When a threat is resolved, our negative affect becomes euphoria and the suspense ends.
The vital aspect of the theory is that enjoyment derives from the degree of negative affect accumulated during exposure to the horror film and the positive affect / reaction that results from the resolution of the threat. Very few studies have tested the theory, although limited reviews provide some support for the model (Hoffner and Levine, 2005). Zillmann et al. (1975) showed cartoons of children who varied in suspense and measured facial expressions, physiological arousal and cognitive responses of the participants. They discovered that the taste for the film increased as the suspense increased. The taste was especially good when the threat was overcome, but the relationship between fear and taste was not examined in the study.
US (Jordan Peele)
After the unprecedented success of Get Out, where Peele won his first Oscar for best original screenplay, he made a palpable dent in the horror universe. Going out was not an ordinary movie. With his ingenious premise (spoiler alert) of a white family stealing black people’s bodies to transfer their consciousness and live after their fragile white bodies had died, Peele had created a cunning way to portray the subconscious racial disparity that was still prevalent in the United States while weaving a fantastic horror thriller for himself.
Through his horror brand, he also seeks to fix the representation that black people have had in the genre, where black actors have generally been turned into roles where they are one of the first to die or are used as fools. To lower the comic relief that is supposed to do all the stupidities that none of his co-characters would do In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Peele mentions: “I don’t see myself choosing a white guy as the protagonist. Written and directed by him, Us is Peele’s second foray into horror and revolves around the Wilson family: Gabe (father), Adelaide (mother), Zora (daughter) and Jason (son), who are terrified by another family during their weekend getaway to a coastal town. The strange thing is that each member of the Wilson family has a manic doppelganger in the “other” family, who wears a red jumpsuit and carries scissors. The red family bursts into their summer home and attacks them brutally with a clear intention to kill and for no reason. In a strange scene, the red family makes them sit on the couch while they sit on the other side, each member facing their twin. Then, in a hoarse and choked voice, the red mother talks about a girl and her shadow, and how their lives turned out to be completely different even though they were the same. This prelude refers to the opening scene where a black girl separates from her parents at a beach fair and meets another girl who looks exactly like her inside a mirrored house. As we learn later in the story, this girl is Adelaide, who has somehow overcome her trauma. Although she doesn’t want to go to the beach where her encounter had happened several years ago, Gabe convinces her that she doesn’t know its truth. A few days before the attack, inexplicable coincidences begin to occur around him. When she finally tells her husband about the hall of mirrors, he doesn’t believe her, until the red family appears at her door.
US Story line
To get away from their busy lives, the Wilson family goes on vacation to Santa Cruz, California, with the plan to spend time with their friends, the Tyler family. On a day at the beach, his little son Jason almost leaves, causing his mother Adelaide to protect himself from his family. That night, four mysterious people broke into Adelaide’s childhood home where they are staying. The family is surprised to discover that intruders resemble them, only with grotesque appearances.
Escape Room
The suspense at the end knowing that a second film will take place. Two heroes against villains who survive until the end and then manage to overthrow the master of the game. I also loved the personal touch like his personal disasters near home like the ice lake for the guy who almost died in a storm. Rudolph’s password for the person who crashed the same night listening to her. For those who complain about not much gore, this movie was not made to be that kind of movie.
It was a movie of challenging the odds. I can’t wait to see the second part. However, despite all my support for the movie, I was disappointed at the end when they showed the next possible challenge. I mean the question for the pilot puzzle, a cloud ruined it a bit. It is just an average riddle no longer done something creative or new. Also the escape rooms that did not exist after being kidnapped were a disappointment. Making them work with the police to find the responsible organization would have been a great turn. Another thing that I would have liked to see is more of the evil company. Anyway, these are just my two cents on the movie.
The escape room in the movie represent the fears of the characters. Each room is dedicated to a specific character and their fears, due to the unpleasant stories of the past that everyone has. Some of them include psychological states, which means that sometimes it is difficult to accept reality and we try to block something that terrifies us or something that makes us ashamed. All characters have a similar story to each other, all reaching one extreme. They fear themselves. They try to escape from their own past, which is something they cannot avoid until they meet face to face with the room that depends on their choices and decisions.
Escape Room Story line
Six people from diverse backgrounds present themselves with a puzzle cube: Zoey, a physics student Jason, a rich day trader, Ben, to the farmer Mike, a truck driver, Amanda, a veteran of the Iraq war and Danny, an escape room enthusiast. All participants receive a puzzle that they must solve. This happens on a normal day of the week. Once they solve the puzzle, there it is and the game has begun.
Six strangers receive mysterious black boxes with tickets to an immersive escape room to have the opportunity to earn tons of money. Being locked in several rooms with extreme conditions, they discover the secrets behind the escape room and must fight to survive and find a way out.
It was a worthy sequel to me. At first I had my doubts, where it seemed that it was going to be a total repetition of the first. Fortunately, it went in a completely different direction and made me guess almost the entire movie.
I loved the first one and was extremely excited about this and was satisfied. That is all I can ask for. Jessica Rothe is a damn star. She is by far the best part of both movies. His characterization for Tree is outstanding. She nails comedy, anger, fear and sadness very well. I look forward to the continuation of this series.
